SegmentOS offers a wide range of question types, grouped by purpose in the Questions & Research Methods dialog. This guide explains each one and when to reach for it.

What it is

When you click Add a Question, types are organized into categories. Choose the type that matches the kind of answer you want — picking one option, ranking items, capturing text, or simply displaying content.

The available question types

Pick one of each type

  • Single answer — respondent picks one option. Best for mutually exclusive choices.
  • Multiple choice — respondent picks several options. Good for "select all that apply."
  • Dropdown — pick one from a dropdown list. Useful for long option lists.
  • Yes/No — a simple two-option question.
  • Image Choice — pick from a set of images instead of text.

Rank / order items

  • Ranking — order items from most to least important (Premium/Pro).
  • Rating scale — rate on a numeric scale with min/max labels.
  • Slider — drag a slider to choose a value.
  • Matrix/Grid — rate multiple items against the same scale together (Premium/Pro).
  • Likert Scale — an agreement scale with custom labels, e.g. Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree (Premium/Pro).

Text responses

  • Text — a short, single-line answer.
  • Long text — a paragraph response, ideal for open-ended feedback.
  • Email — captures and validates an email address.
  • Number — numeric input (used, for example, in pricing studies).

User feedback

  • Loyalty Score — a 0–10 recommendation question, the classic loyalty/recommendation metric.

Form actions

  • Date — a date picker.
  • Time — a time picker.
  • File upload — let respondents upload files.

Content & Media

  • Text Block — display information or instructions (not answerable).
  • Image — show an image to respondents.
  • Video — embed a YouTube, Vimeo, or other video URL.

Tips & best practices

  • Use Single answer when only one response makes sense and Multiple choice when several can apply.
  • Reserve Long text for the one or two open-ends that matter most — too many lower completion.
  • Use Matrix/Grid to rate many items efficiently instead of repeating identical rating questions.
  • Content & Media blocks are perfect for setting context, showing an ad, or describing a concept before asking about it.

Plan availability

Most question types are available on every plan. Ranking, Matrix/Grid, and Likert Scale require Premium or Pro and appear locked with a Premium badge on the Free plan.
