The builder is where you design your survey — adding questions, grouping them into sections, setting branching logic, formatting the look, and reviewing before launch. This guide covers it end to end.
What it is
The builder opens on the Build tab. A left sidebar lists building tools (Questions, Logic, Flow Chart, Formatting, Settings, and Full Question Bank); the center is your live survey canvas. The top toolbar holds your survey name, a Build tab plus a More dropdown for secondary views (Audience, Quotas, Distribute, Scoring, Languages, Experience, Settings), a Preview button, and the Continue button that takes you to launch.
How to build your survey
- On an empty survey, click Add a Question to insert a single question, or Add a Section to create a labeled group first. You can combine both.
- In the Questions & Research Methods dialog, pick a question type. The new question is added and opened for editing.
- Type your question text. Use the Question tab to set options, scales, and answer settings.
- Toggle Required question on to make an answer mandatory. You can also enable Allow "Other" option and Randomize options for choice questions.
- Reorder questions by dragging the handle, or use the up/down arrows in the sidebar. Drag a question into a section to group it, or onto the ungrouped list to remove it from a section.
- To add branching, open a question and switch to its Logic tab to create skip-logic rules based on previous answers (or the running score). Section-level conditions are set in each section header.
- Open the Formatting tab to customize your survey's colors, fonts, and logo (see custom branding).
- Use Settings in the sidebar to randomize sections or questions, and to run Fix ordering if numbering ever looks off.
- Click Continue to reach the Almost ready review screen, configure optional enhancements, then Publish Survey.
Tips & best practices
- Use sections for longer surveys with distinct topics or stages; flat lists work well for short surveys.
- Add Text Block, Image, or Video content blocks between questions for instructions or stimuli — these don't count as answerable questions.
- Preview often; the Preview button shows the respondent's exact experience.
- A published survey can still be edited — changes apply immediately for new respondents.
Plan availability
The builder is available on all plans. A few advanced question types (Ranking, Matrix/Grid, Likert Scale) require Premium or Pro, as do scoring, multi-language surveys, response quotas, and custom branding on the Formatting tab.
