A brand awareness survey measures how many people in your market know your brand, recall it on their own, and recognize it when prompted, usually compared against competitors. You measure it with two question types: unaided awareness, where people name brands from memory, and aided awareness, where they pick yours from a list. SegmentOS includes a Brand Awareness template that asks both, plus familiarity and brand-association questions, in one ready-to-send survey.

What brand awareness is

Brand awareness is the share of your target audience who know your brand exists. It sits at the top of the marketing funnel: people cannot consider or buy a brand they have never heard of. Measuring it over time tells you whether marketing is growing reach, and benchmarking against competitors shows where you stand in the category. It is the natural starting point before deeper work like brand perception or brand tracking.

Aided vs unaided awareness

The two core measures answer different questions:

  • Unaided (spontaneous) awareness: "When you think of running shoes, which brands come to mind?" with no list shown. The first brand named is top-of-mind awareness, the strongest signal. Unaided recall is harder to earn and more valuable.
  • Aided (prompted) awareness: "Which of these running-shoe brands have you heard of?" with a list including your brand and competitors. This captures recognition, which is broader but easier.

A healthy brand scores well on both; a brand with high aided but low unaided awareness is recognized but not memorable.

Worked example

Suppose 500 category buyers answer your survey. 18% name your brand unprompted (unaided), 7% name it first (top-of-mind), and 64% recognize it from a list (aided). A close competitor scores 31% unaided and 80% aided. That gap tells you people recognize you but rarely think of you first, so your priority is memorability, not reach.

Key questions to include

A solid brand awareness survey covers:

  1. A category-usage screener so you survey real buyers.
  2. An unaided recall question ("which brand comes to mind first?").
  3. An aided awareness question listing your brand and competitors.
  4. A familiarity question (how well they know your brand).
  5. Recent purchase or usage in the category.
  6. Brand associations (which words describe your brand).
  7. A recommendation likelihood (NPS-style) question.

The SegmentOS Brand Awareness template includes all of these.

When to use it (and when not)

Run a brand awareness survey when you are launching, entering a new market, after a major campaign, or on a regular cadence to watch reach grow. A typical sample is 300 to 500 category buyers per market so percentages are stable. Use it when you want top-of-funnel reach metrics. It is not the right tool when you need to understand why people perceive your brand a certain way, or to track the full funnel over time. For perception or repeated tracking, choose the matching templates instead.

How to run this in SegmentOS

  1. Start a new study and choose the Brand Awareness template.
  2. Enter your product category, your brand name, and the competitor brands you want to measure against. The template builds the awareness funnel and association questions around them.
  3. Review the eleven questions in the survey builder and adjust wording or competitors as needed.
  4. Launch to your audience or buy a representative sample from the audience panel, aiming for 300 to 500 category buyers.
  5. Use segmenting your results to compare awareness across demographics or regions, and re-run the survey periodically to track change.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between aided and unaided brand awareness?

Unaided awareness asks people to name brands from memory with no list, capturing spontaneous recall. Aided awareness shows a list and asks which brands they recognize, capturing prompted recognition. Unaided is harder to earn and a stronger signal of brand strength.

What is top-of-mind awareness?

Top-of-mind awareness is the very first brand a person names in an unaided recall question. It is the strongest awareness metric because it shows your brand is the default association in the category.

How many responses do I need for a brand awareness survey?

Plan for 300 to 500 responses from category buyers per market so your awareness percentages are stable. Run the same survey on a regular cadence to track changes over time.

Does SegmentOS have a brand awareness template?

Yes. The Brand Awareness template measures aided and unaided awareness against competitors, plus familiarity, purchase history, and brand associations. It is a free template with eleven questions and about a six-minute completion time.
